SaintLeonFRTexte: Marie Labossière et Yvette Gaultier
Photographie: Michel Grandmaison

The Journal of Étienne Mercier

JournalofEtienneMercierENText by David Bouchard
Paintings by Gordon Miller
In 1853, Étienne Mercier, a French-Canadian voyageur painter, is tasked by his employer to return to the Queen Charlotte Islands and document his travels into Haida territory. A wide-eyed and good-natured Mercier takes the opportunity to try to track down his long-lost friend, Clément, in the wilderness of what would later become the Canadian Pacific coast.Written in Mercier’s own broken English, or Franglais, and punctuated with traditional Canadien folk songs, David Bouchard’s candid glance into the everyday tribulations of a typical voyageur vividly depicts—along with Gordon Miller’s evocative illustrations—life on the colonial frontier in the mid-nineteenth century.

One of Canada’s all-time best-selling authors and most sought-after public speakers, Métis author David Bouchard has presented to hundreds of thousands of educators, parents and students the world over. Through his keynotes and presentations, he champions literacy and promotes Indigenous culture. A former teacher and principal, Bouchard is an award-winning author of over thirty-five best selling books, published in many countries and languages.

In March 1853, Etienne Mercier, a 28-year-old explorer and trapper, is hired by the Hudson Bay Co. to explore the Queen Charlotte Islands. Mercier sets out most enthusiastically on this voyage in a canoe… Mercier scripts a journal in mesmerizing detail of words, illustrations and lyrics. His deep respect for the land, water, wildlife and the Haida Indians is present throughout.
